Fishing in Key West

Fishing the Southernmost city has many options. We are only miles away from the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico which hosts many shipwrecks that hold the infamous Goliath Groupers and other big predatory fish.
The reef in the Atlantic is the 3rd largest natural reef in the world. It is home to thousands of species of fish and coral. A true variety of species can be caught here.

The Marquesas is a group of islands about 25 miles west of Key West. These islands are most famous for sport fishing and the discovery of the shipwreck “The Atocha” which held millions of dollars of treasure.

Another 35 miles to the west is the Dry Tortugas National Park, most famous again for fishing and holding Dr. Samuel Mudd who was convicted of conspiracy with the assassination of President Lincoln.

Straight south of all of this is the offshore playground of all the pelagic fish like Dolphin, Tuna and Marlin. I believe it would take many trips or a lifetime to experience all the fishing Key West has to offer!

Top 5 reasons to visit Key West

  • Safe Travel: This is the closest you will get to the Caribbean while still staying inside the USA
  • Variety: Fish multiple days and fish the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic or fish both in one day. If the wind is up and you are prone to sea sickness the back country can give relief with calm seas and shallow waters, making it very comfortable for sea sick prone individuals.

  • Night life: If you are a night owl the world famous Duval Street is within walking distance from the boat and many of the hotels in town. Sloppy Joes, Margaretville, Irish Kevin’s, and Hogs Breath bars are the most famous.

  • Food: If you don’t practice catch and release and want to have your catch cooked, Dante’s Pool Bar is footsteps from the boat. They have a great “Cook Your Catch” offer that is hard to beat! If you bring in your catch it is hard to find fresher fish than that! For other Food options the Island has many great restaurants. Higher end restaurants include Prime 951, Latitudes on Sunset Key, and AB Lobster House. For a more casual lunch or dinner Dantes, Alonzo’s, or the Boat house offer nice meals. For a local and quick bite try Fishermen’s Café, Garbo’s Grill, and Cuban Coffee Queen!

  • Activities: Fishing is always highest on the list! But after that Key West hosts many other activities including sunset cruises, para sailing, Mallory Square, Smathers Beach, Dry Tortugas National Park, jet ski tours, Glass Bottom Boat, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sandbar island cruises.
